Support the Schoolreaders BBC Radio 4 Appeal, and help provide children with the literacy skills needed for a lifetime of learning.

We would like to say a huge thank you to our Patron, Gyles Brandreth for presenting the Schoolreaders Radio 4 appeal, and to all those who have supported Schoolreaders throughout the week. Your support will be life-changing for so many children.

One in four children leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard. These children will struggle to access their secondary education, and this will limit their future opportunities. At Schoolreaders, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn to read well so they can get the best possible chance in life

Since the charity’s formation ten years ago, Schoolreaders has provided dedicated volunteers to primary schools, ensuring that children will receive one-on-one reading time with an adult each week.  Our 2,700 volunteers play a crucial role in helping children improve their literacy, boosting their confidence, increasing their love of reading, and preparing them for a lifetime of learning to come.

Why This Appeal Matters

The impact of Schoolreaders volunteers on children’s lives is significant. Take Lucy’s story, for example. Ten years ago, Lucy, who is dyslexic, struggled with reading. Thanks to the consistent support of Liz, her Schoolreaders volunteer, Lucy gained the confidence and reading skills she needed to succeed. Lucy triumphed in her GCSEs, achieving top grades including a 9 (A*) in English Language, setting her on the path to university.

Lucy’s story is just one of many, and it highlights the difference that one-on-one reading support can make. By supporting Schoolreaders, you can help us reach more children like Lucy, ensuring they have the same opportunities to succeed.

We need your support to continue providing this essential service. Your donations will help us recruit, train, and place more volunteers in schools, giving more children the chance to improve their reading skills. Just £40 will provide one child with an entire year of weekly reading sessions with an adult.
